Are you new to indoor plants and overwhelmed by the array of soil products available? Not sure where to begin? Do you buy a normal potting mix? Do you spend a whole heap of money on different products to make your own mix?

Well, you're not alone. As a new plant parent, I was also confused about the best soil mix for my indoor plants. But don't worry, we're here to help you.

RETRO REPOTTING INDOOR PLANT MIX FOR BEGINNERS

Introducing the custom-made Retro Repotting Soil Mix, which was created by researching the different soil medium recommendations by many plant experts. This mix is suitable for a variety of indoor plants, making it easier for you to take care of them without researching each plant's needs and creating a whole new medium for each one.

This mix has been keeping my indoor plants happy for a year now, and all I had to do was add a fertilizer when needed. That's only two plant products I needed to utilize, and no need for me to buy a gardening shed to store a never-ending array of products.

WHAT IT CONTAINS

The Retro Repotting Soil Mix includes a ratioed mix of:

  • organic compost - offering your plants the nutrition they need to thrive
  • coco coir -giving them a means of water retention, without waterlogging, and the oxygen their roots need
  • perlite - providing good drainage

DIMENSIONS

The 5 L bag of soil mix weighs roughly 1.4 kg and can go a lot further than expected since a lot of indoor plants do not need as big a pot as we think.

WHAT PLANTS LOVE THIS MIX

This mix has been used successfully with a variety of plants, including:

  • Monstera
  • Chain of Hearts
  • Fittonia
  • Dieffenbachia
  • Peperomia
  • Chamaedorea (indoor palm)
  • Philodendron
  • Calathea
  • Pothos
  • Scindapsus

It has even been used for succulents and cacti but with added gravel for extra drainage.

HOW TO USE

  1. When using the Retro Repotting Soil Mix, make sure to use a pot that is only a couple of inches larger than the root ball. Also, ensure that the pot has drainage holes.
  2. Place some of the mix in the base or rocks if you want a bit of extra drainage, then hold your plant in place and gently surround it with the soil mix. Once it looks full enough, give the pot a few taps around all edges and base to ensure the medium has filled in all the gaps. Add some extra soil if needed after the soil has settled around your plant.
  3. Now give the pot a good soaking of water. I like to fill a container with water and place the pot inside it to draw up moisture from the bottom and also pour water over the top. Let the pot sit in this water for 30 minutes. Once the time is up, place your pot in a location where it can fully drain for at least 30 minutes. Once it's no longer dripping water when lifted up, it can be placed in a decorative pot or location of your choice.
  4. Reseal your soil mix bag if there are leftovers and store it away until next time.
